Scratch a cynic, and you’ll find a disappointed idealist.

I am so very bummed that George Carlin died of heart failure yesterday. He and Bill Hicks were probably my two all-time favorite comedians. George Carlin’s penchant for skewering humanity’s incredibly stupid shit was unmatched, and will be missed. This is a little insensitive given other recent events, but it’s still one of my favorite bits. It ends well.

Anyway, there is certainly much better coverage of this out there on the internets (the best I’ve read, so far, coming from The Nation), so I shall leave you with this:

Rat shit, bat shit, dirty old twat!
69 assholes tied in a knot!
Hooray, lizard shit, fuck!

I salute you, sir.

I have photo credit on the website for People en Español. I don’t know if these will end up in a print edition or just stay on the web, but I’m pretty happy.

Artists Wanted Competition

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I have submitted a few images to an Artists Wanted competition that I just heard about today through the lovely Rachel Gomez. The big prizes are awarded by actual judges, but there’s a $500 prize attached to a popularity contest, so I would appreciate it if people would vote for myself, Rachel, and another friend, Emily Merrill.

Rachel’s gallery is at www.artistwanted.org/gomezra.
Emily’s gallery is at www.artistwanted.org/emmyjeanne.
And my gallery is at www.artistwanted.org/damianhopper.

Gee, why am I not surprised?

Jarrod disagreed with my statement about UPS in my last entry. What I said was:

… UPS is often the company that proves the Republicans wrong regarding their theory that private industry always does a better job than the government.

I stand by that. I think the only place I’ve ever lived where I didn’t have problems with UPS was San Francisco. In Lancaster, we used to have a driver who wouldn’t even bother to attempt to bring packages to the door. He’d just leave delivery notices on the mailboxes on the street (which, by the way, is a violation of federal law). Then we had one who would throw packages up to the 2nd-floor balcony if no one was home. Anyway, I wasn’t expecting them to provide me with another anecdotal example to back up my opinion so quickly. And I don’t mean to be a dick about it, but I definitely feel like things go wrong more often than right with UPS.

UPS tracking page

Now, where I do have to give UPS points is in the tracking system itself. Try getting detailed, up-to-the-minute tracking information off the Post Office’s website.
